  1. I do not know what you speak about. But, in our place Yethan pazham (called nenthram pazham in chennai) and rice flour mixed together is baked in the choola (earthen stove – the ordinary stove used in villages the firewood used being the coconut palm leaves and other wastes of coconut palms). It is harmless and tasty. To some extent, it will taste like cake. (No egg)

      1. It is known by the name “orappam”. The essence of coconut grates (Thengaippaal) is also added. Egg is optional. Hot coal at both ends (bottom and top). I think in the alternative it can be prepared in micro oven also. Do it on trial and error basis.

        1. There is something called orappam which my grandmother used to make … Let me check with MJ whether it is the same recipe. She used to say it needs heat from both sides, a recipe lost after my grandmother passed away. I didn’t know it used ethakka.

          1. Most keralites have forgotten this recipe. It is a harmless dish. It makes use of Yethanpazham when it is available in plenty. Pazhampori is more tasty, but not so healthy as it is fried in oil.

            1. Pazhampori is yum! So is unakkaya (banana rolls stuffed with grated coconut, nuts and jaggery), and uniappams.

              Amma hasn’t tried making orappam after her mother passed away! We were thinking of making it many times, this will act as a reminder to make the dish finally.

                1. Thanks to you, MJ and I had a discussion on orappam, her memories of tasty sweet, one of her mother’s best recipes… And me asking her to try making it next time I’m home. But she says her recipe does not have ethakka.

                  1. Good luck. May use some other banana or no banana. I have no idea. Let her prepare it and if it is successful, I shall try. But I can use only micro oven. I think that should be even better than a conventional chula.
