Onam Again.. in two weeks time :)

I am not one of those Malayalees who scream from the top of the roof that I am one. Consequently, when I joined this campus, it took a few months for the Malayalees in hostel and campus to recognize I am also from their state. The first Onam therefore was an immediate affair. I happened to walk past where these girls were planning to make the flower carpet and I joined in the effort. It was fun. Therefore, starting the next year, I too was involved into the planning for the hostel show. A few among us begin to look out for designs a week or two early around Onam.

The flower carpet in the post is special because of two reasons. It was to prove a point to the Malayalee committee as to what is, and two, about we don’t care. The previous year our hostel was relegated to the fourth place because of a confusion in the mind of the judge as to where the direction east was. I still fume at the thought of his irrelevant question, even when we came out with the compass and showed him the direction we had placed the wick of the lamp was facing east. As is, whenever there is a fight, I’m always involved. There began a war in our FB campus Mal group about the rules to be followed while judging a flower carpet. There were meetings, arguments, fireworks, walkouts but finally the committee agreed. So now, after all that drama, we were sure our hostel would win first this time round whatever we did 😀 😀 the tricks of the trade, you see.

With that kind of freedom, the hostel core flower carpet committee, that is the four of us took a decision not to use the usual orange and yellow colours for the carpet. We executed the plan beautifully, the gradation was perfect. We won hands down 😀 😀 😀 😀

Like an Onakatha …there are stories and stories to tell you about how this pookalam came into shape, the sleepless 48 hours, the train journey to Dadar Market, how the clay modelling workshop gave us ideas to make the thrikakarappans…

This time round, the creative core team decided that we will not have orange and yellow dominate our flower carpet. We wanted to use other colours and combinations. We stuck to shades of the colour, pink, with the main flower being the kadali… the flower comes in three shades. Add the vadamalli flower into this gradation, it becomes a 4th shade of pink. We stuck to this gradation, caught all the bricks that came our way, and went ahead with the plan. We are a bunch of 3 who want to create new…
