August 2, anyone…

Along with the many forwards on friendship, another forward that did the rounds yesterday among some of the Malayalees who use whatsapp began with this question. “Do you know/remember the significance of today, August 2?” ๐Ÿ˜€

It was a mere coincidence that I happened to watch the Hindi adaptation of the film, Drishyam last night. August 2 is an important date in the original Malayalam story as it is the day when the protagonist, Georgekutty (Mohanlal) and his family went to Thodupuzha to attend the christian retreat at the town church!

I recommend you watch Drishyam in any of the languages because it is an experience different from any film, as it is script driven. I’ve heard that the Tamil adaptation starring Kamal Hasan is at par with the Malayalam original of 2013. If you get a chance, watch the Malayalam one.. the same way I would say, watch Manichitrathazhru the 1993 original of Bhool Bhulaiyaaย released in 2007/08

More on the Hindi Drishyam later.. as a one line review, Tabu rocks so does the actor who plays the police constable!! but I missed the family bonding that was the crux of the story in the Malayalam film.

  1. Didn’t get to see the other versions but watched the Telugu one. It is really good. Got me to the edge of the seat and even felt bad for that family. Now that I think of it again, all of it seems so funny as I’ve seen many more better thrillers and family dramas. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Hahha! I think Drishyam the malayalam original scored in the first week of its release because of two reasons. 1. The posters for the film gave the malayalee mohanlal loving audience the return of mohanlal as the common man, a role he excelled in the 80s and 90s which made space in our hearts. The second reason is jeethu Joseph the director and his previous film, Memories, another thriller .. which was a superhit. The combination was deadly.. nobody had an inkling that this family drama would turn into a edge of the seat thriller. I admire the script a very tight one after a long time in a malayalam film
