Micro Blogging Mondays: Concepts

Most of us live our lives based on some concepts, but, what if these concepts were just something we inherited from somewhere, they attached itself to us like that, it came from someone and we on our part took it, and kept it within us.. when the time came, used it!

Abstract? Ok! Take a simple test!

Case 1: Close your eyes for a second and think of Gandhi..

let’s see what turns up, write it down somewhere. It would seem we all may have the same image of this man .. now ask yourself whether you ever consciously inserted an image of Gandhi into our mind, and was it this image?

Case 2: Most of us would have heard and many of us would have taken part in this experiment, when a prof says, “draw a table!” and 95% of the class will draw a rectangular dining table with 4 legs! Whereas, we encounter many different kinds of tables.. round, square, small, long, coffee, garden, office, laboratory.. one, two, three, six legged..

now, ask yourselves why these images do not appear when that prof say, “draw a table!” That is exactly my point!  (That class could be the turning point from which, next time somebody asks us to draw a table, we may draw it differently.)

The problem lies in our environment, certain concepts, here it is an example of an image, are bombarded at us.. unconsciously prioritized, lined up in a hierarchy.. so, most of them talk of certain concepts in a certain way! We are conditioned to think, speak and visualize in certain ways, only! So what yields, the same image!

Case 1(a): Close your eyes again for a second and think of Gandhi, again… what do you see now.. write it down somewhere, and compare with the first image!

It is difficult to live with people who have a set of concepts in their heads about everything, most of which are borrowed! They wouldn’t have thought about it at all.. or worse still, they think what they inherited is what is, they may not have even heard of the word versions, (I know, the horror of it all)!

All of us are prey to this illness, just that some of us choose willingly not to fall into that trap, and try to detox our systems regularly! Now you know what flushing it out really means! 😛

Case 3: Take a sheet of paper and draw a tree..
