That was a fascinating piece of information.. 🙂
I just realized that “occupation” the word stems from an idea of an activity that occupies us. Something we are engaged in, and this engagement could be at a level of thought or action. In addition, we repeat the activity.
What we call our occupation is almost always the job we do and we repeat what we do daily in office.. or even if we work from home.. we customize the product according to the user.. but repeat we do..
The problem is I hadn’t thought about this word in this way before until yesterday.
So, I had a glance at the dictionary entry, it does say, occupation is other other than our vocation… something that occupies a person..but how did it not occur to me in the first place that .. the word occupy is part of the larger word occupation 😛 and therefore could mean an extended meaning.
and here, at least, I have been using occupation as “
I’m looking more closely at words now..
I remember distinctly when a friend was reading a novel and she came across the word confinement. We could have been in class 6 or 7 in school.. If I remember right, it was just one sentence… That sentence was about a woman in confinement.
However, something about the context was not right and it did not sit well with our knowledge of the meaning of the word confinement.
The sentence conveyed that the woman was just not confined or just restricted to a room or a space.
The character that comes to mind is Rapunzel who was confined to that room in the tall tower in the forest by the evil witch.. “Rapunzel, Rapunzel.. let down your hair.. for I might climb the golden stair” Have you watched the film from Disney, Tangled.. (2010).. the character of the horse.. aha!
We found it bizarre that there was no force or pressure and no resistance from woman’s side. Unlike Rapunzel this protagonist did not want out of the situation. She seemed to enjoy her state of being confined and it seemed like it was done to her with her permission. If it was today after all these years, the immediate reaction would have been this happy state of confinement … some traumatic psychology syndrome induced as a result of being confined.. for so long.. 😛 😛 (don’t haw at me for that!.. a lot of theory and academic work does that to a student)
The fact that there was no struggle puzzled our reading group of friends…
One of the last recourses, before asking MJ was to look the word up in the dictionary. We found that confinement had a second meaning and it was used in the field of Gynaecology & Obstetrics. It meant “the period from the onset of labour to the birth of a child”
Everything seemed to fall into place then. The protagonist was pregnant! aha!
Finding word meaning are fun, many follow an associative logic. But after a time in any field, ya like the occupations we take up, we take liberties with the activities that occupy our days.. and time.. then! something like the word occupation needs to happen.. to reveal and send us packing to our basics again 🙂 🙂 ..
Any incident.. I’m sure there would be many.. if you remember any.
